What is Murano Glass?

Murano glass is a traditional Italian craft exclusively practiced by a small number of craftsmen on the island of Murano in Venice, Northern Italy.

As the glass industry was a valuable source of income for the Republic of Venice, in 1291, the government confined all glass craftsmen to the island of Murano to prevent the outflow of advanced glass technology.

Since then, Murano has been called the “Island of Glass” and has become a region with a high density of glass workshops.

Treasured by the Nobles

Murano glass was considered a symbol of great status even in the olden times. Beautifully depicting the bride and the groom on the front and the back respectively, this elegant enamel-painted cup was made to celebrate an aristocratic marriage.

Even today, there are people all over the world who desire to obtain Murano glass to indicate their prosperity and success. Further, museums in various countries showcase Murano glass as a testimony to its historical importance as a handicraft.

How about chisa's Murano Glass?

Creating original articles for the Japanese people on the closed island of Murano

Till this date, the glass workshops of Maestros on Murano Island follow a system of hereditary succession.

Therefore, it is impossible for a stranger to turn up and promptly establish a Murano glass business.

At chisa, however, we are able to create and present special Murano glass for the Japanese people, thanks to the long-standing relationship with the craftsmen of Murano that our representative Chisako Kotaki, who dearly loves Murano glass, has nurtured with great care for over 40 years.

From decorations to tools

The traditional patterns and shapes of Murano glass are generally quite ornate and decorative since most of them were made for European aristocrats. This has resulted in Murano glassworks often being labelled as ornaments and decorations.

However, we at chisa, aspire to introduce Murano glass in the everyday life in Japan.

We have been engaged in fusing together traditional Japanese aesthetics which are known all over the world for their simplicity and elegance with the Italian glassmaking art with the aim of introducing unique articles which can shine in as many settings as possible.

Try putting food on a Murano glass plate, or try arranging Japanese seasonal flowers in a Venetian case.

We hope that our works will seamlessly blend into your daily lives and bring about new discoveries and bliss.

Murano Glass for your life

No two Murano glass objects are identical; each is brimming with the charm of handmade creation. Despite being made from glass, Murano glassworks exude a sense of warmth and bestow a kind of extraordinary healing to our busy lifestyles.

High quality Murano glass?

If you have ever traveled to Venice, you may have seen many glass articles lined up in souvenir shops.
However, chisa's Murano glass objects are distinct from these souvenirs as our glassworks are created by senior craftsmen called "maestro" as well as a select group of people involved in production.

Live with Murano glass in Japan

We aspire to incorporate Murano glass into the daily lifestyle in Japan as much as possible.

Consequently, this will contribute to the development of Murano glass and perhaps to some extent, the protection of Maestros and their workshops.

Decline of Murano Glass

Murano glass is loved and coveted by the wealthy in various countries, just as it was cherished by aristocrats in the past. The same is true for the bubble period in Japan.

Experience and understand Murano glass

Among the mass-produced glassworks flooding the market, the hope of wanting people to know and touch the soft, gentle warmth of glass is only getting stronger within us.

We humbly urge you to experience the beauty of Murano glass leisurely, without any haste. Wouldn't you welcome the gentle chisa glass that has been handcrafted by Maestros and crossed seas into your life?
